AI has changed the way websites are built. Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Lovable can generate website layouts, write content, and even produce fully functioning websites in a fraction of the time it used to take.
So, it's a fair question: Can AI just build my website now?
My honest answer? Yes! AI can build you a website. But can it build you an effective website that attracts customers, ranks on Google, represents your brand, and turns visitors into paying clients? That's a different story.
As someone who builds websites professionally, I've spent considerable time experimenting with AI website-building tools. They're impressive, they're getting better, and I use them myself. But there are some important things business owners should understand before handing their entire online presence over to AI.
Can AI Build a Good WEBSITE?
One of the biggest problems I see with AI-generated websites is how similar they all look. The fonts, layouts, headings, imagery, and overall aesthetic often follow the same predictable patterns. You end up with a website that technically looks professional but doesn't necessarily communicate anything unique about your business.
And that's a problem.
Your website is often the first impression someone has of your company. It should communicate your brand, establish trust, and give potential customers a reason to choose you over the competition.
A generic website does very little to accomplish that.
There's also the issue of user experience (UX). A good website isn't just a collection of attractive pages. There's a lot of thought that goes into how someone navigates it, where information is positioned, and what actions you want visitors to take.
For example, where should your calls to action appear? How many should there be? What colour should they be to stand out? What information does someone need to see before they're ready to contact you?
These are decisions that require strategic thinking, not just generating a page from a prompt.
What About SEO? Can AI Websites Rank on Google?
Search engine optimization is another area where I believe AI website builders still have some catching up to do.
A website needs more than a few keywords sprinkled throughout its content to rank on Google. It requires a thoughtful SEO strategy, properly structured content, keyword targeting, internal linking, technical optimization, and a solid site architecture.
AI can help with many of these things, but it doesn't automatically know what your business needs to compete in your local market.
The same goes for website copywriting. AI can generate paragraphs of text very quickly, but producing content that speaks directly to your customers, addresses their concerns, and differentiates your business takes considerably more thought.
You can have a website with beautifully written-sounding content that ultimately says very little.
And remember, just because an AI tool generates something doesn't mean it's optimized to perform.
Should You Use AI to Build Your Website?
Here's where my opinion might surprise you: I actually think there's a place for AI-generated websites, and I offer them myself.
Not every business has $4,000–$5,000 to invest in a professionally designed, fully customized website. Sometimes you need something affordable, something fast, and something that gets your business online.
That's why I've developed an AI website offering through McGrawesome.
For approximately $1,000, I can build and deliver a website in as little as two days. I use AI to accelerate the development process, but I still handle the direction, setup, deployment, and domain connection.
There are trade-offs. These websites won't have the same level of customization, SEO strategy, or conversion optimization as a fully custom website.
But for a business owner who is budget-conscious and needs to get online quickly, it can be a great starting point.
The important thing is understanding what you're getting and what you're sacrificing.
Will AI Eventually Replace Web Designers?
I think AI website-building tools will continue to improve. They'll become more capable, more sophisticated, and easier for everyday business owners to use.
But I don't believe that means professional web designers are going away.
In fact, I think the value of a good web designer will increasingly come from the strategy, creativity, and expertise they bring to the process rather than simply knowing how to build pages.
AI is a tool. And like any tool, the results depend heavily on who's using it.
My advice? Experiment with AI. See what it can do. There's nothing wrong with trying to build your own website.
But if your website is an important part of how your business attracts customers and generates revenue, don't confuse having a website with having an effective one.
You don't just need a website. You need a website that works for your business.
And there's still a big difference between the two.
